A Mercedes-Benz EQE electric car exploded in a parking lot of an apartment complex in Incheon, South Korea. This caused a huge fire, which sent 21 people to the hospital with minor injuries and damaged 70 other cars.

The explosion was caught on security cameras. The video shows the car parked and not charging, starting to smoke from the battery area. Moments later, it bursts into flames, spreading to nearby cars.

The Incheon Fire Department sent 177 firefighters and 80 pieces of equipment to put out the fire, which took eight hours to control.

A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson said, “We can’t confirm details about the exact model and batteries right now. We are taking this very seriously and will work closely with fire authorities to find out what happened.”

The police and fire department are investigating the cause of the fire. Some experts think the car might have been in an accident before the fire, which could have damaged the battery and caused it to overheat. The EQE sedan has a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 90.6 kWh.
