General Motors Developing 6C Ultra-Fast Charging EV in China
Oct 3, 2024
General Motors (GM) is facing significant challenges in China, where its sales have dropped sharply, impacting its joint venture partner, SAIC. One of GM's primary issues is its lack of competitiveness compared to local brands. However, new battery technology may offer GM a chance to regain ground in China.
On September 25, SAIC-GM announced that, in collaboration with CATL, they have developed the industry's first 6C ultra-fast charging lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. One of the key features of this new battery is its ability to provide 200 km of range in just five minutes of charging. The new batteries incorporate several innovative atomic-level technologies to accelerate the charging process.
Currently, Zeekr holds the record for the fastest charging battery, with a 5.5C charging rate that can take the battery from 10% to 80% in 10.5 minutes.
Consumers will be able to purchase vehicles equipped with GM's new ultra-fast charging battery starting next year.
GM is expected to use these new batteries in future models, potentially in production versions of the Buick Electra-L or Electra-LT concepts, which were showcased at this year’s Beijing Auto Show.
