Cylib Constructs Large-Scale Battery Recycling Plant

Sep 23, 2024

Cylib, a startup dedicated to reducing waste from electric vehicle batteries, is building a large-scale battery recycling plant in Germany. With backing from Porsche and Bosch, Cylib has already begun construction of the facility.

The plant, funded by an investment of over 180 million euros ($200 million), will cover 236,000 square feet and aims to produce recycled batteries for the European electric vehicle market. Cylib states that it will be the largest full-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Europe, capable of recycling approximately 30,000 metric tons of spent batteries annually.

The recycled batteries from Cylib's new plant are expected to be used by Porsche, which invested 55 million euros in the startup. According to a source who requested anonymity as the information is not yet public, the project is still in its early stages and has not been finalized.

A Cylib representative noted that investments from partners like Porsche are “strategic,” and the company is actively collaborating with investors on the industrialization of processes and commercial partnerships.

The new plant will primarily serve clients in the automotive, battery manufacturing, and chemical industries. Cylib envisions this facility as the first of many, with plans to expand further across Germany and Europe in the coming years. Located in the Chempark industrial zone, which is predominantly home to chemical industry facilities, the plant benefits strategically from existing supply chains in the area.
