BYD’s luxury Yangwang brand is introducing a new three-row version of its U8 off-road SUV, designed to compete with top luxury SUVs like the Range Rover and Defender. This new model, spotted in China before its official release later this month, will be a major contender in the large luxury SUV market.
The Yangwang brand, launched by BYD in January, initially introduced two models: the U8 SUV and the U9 electric supercar. The U8, which hit the market in November is a significant upgrade from BYD’s more affordable electric vehicles like the Seagull.
The U8 is packed with advanced features, including a "float mode" and "tank turns," which allow it to handle tough terrains. It can even drive through water up to 1,000 mm (about 39 inches) deep, with a special version able to handle up to 1,400 mm (about 55 inches), making it more capable in water than a Defender.
Powered by four electric motors, the U8 delivers up to 1,180 horsepower. Although it has a 49 kWh battery, it also features a 75-liter fuel tank, allowing it to travel up to 621 miles (1,000 km).
The new three-row version of the U8 has some design changes, like a longer wheelbase, to accommodate the extra seating. While most of the design remains the same, including the bold front grille and headlights, the vehicle is slightly longer, likely allowing for a 2+2+2 seating arrangement with luxurious captain’s chairs in the second row.

The current five-seat model is already quite large, and the three-row version is expected to be even bigger. Inside, the U8 will feature the latest BYD technology, including several display screens for both front and rear passengers.
This new U8 will compete with other three-row luxury SUVs like the Range Rover Executive and Defender 130. It will be officially unveiled at the Chengdu Motor Show on August 30.
In addition to the U8, Yangwang also launched the U9 electric supercar earlier this year, offering top-level performance at a more affordable price compared to other supercars.
