Tesla's Robotaxi: What We Know About the Self-Driving Car
Sep 24, 2024
Tesla's highly anticipated robotaxi, promised for nearly five years, is expected to be unveiled in early October 2024. According to Bloomberg, Tesla plans to present the new self-driving car at Warner Bros. Discovery Studios in California.
The exact details of what will be showcased and the specific role of the studio location in the presentation remain unclear. However, a Tesla hardware hacker recently suggested that the company has been gathering new data at the Warner Bros. site, possibly in preparation for the event.
Tesla is expected to introduce a self-driving vehicle designed specifically for ride-hailing purposes. The model may vary in size, from a single-seater to a larger design capable of seating up to 11 passengers. The vehicle is likely to navigate through the studio environment, mimicking real-world streets and road signs for demonstration purposes in a controlled setting. Tesla is also anticipated to discuss the potential development of a dedicated ride-hailing app.
Earlier this year, Rimac revealed a similar city-focused robotaxi concept called Verne, which features a centralized system for charging and maintenance. The Verne concept includes a large entertainment and navigation screen for passengers, suggesting that Tesla’s compact robotaxi could adopt a similar approach.
In September 2024, an employee at Warner Bros. captured an image of a heavily camouflaged yellow prototype vehicle being tested on the studio premises.

Editor's Note: BYD is also making significant advancements in the robotaxi space through its partnership with Uber. The collaboration aims to deploy 100,000 BYD electric vehicles on the Uber platform across global markets, including Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This partnership not only focuses on reducing the cost of EV ownership for Uber drivers but also on promoting the adoption of autonomous-capable vehicles in the future.
