Sony and Honda have become the first Japanese manufacturers to adopt Tesla's charging standard

Oct 8, 2024

Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), a joint venture formed by the two Japanese giants in 2022, has announced that it will adopt Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its Afeela-brand electric vehicles, with sales expected to begin in 2025.

Although the Afeela prototype has already been showcased in various malls across the United States, the new electric vehicle has not yet received significant attention. The vehicle is expected to go on sale in 2025, with deliveries planned for the U.S. and Japan in 2026.

SHM confirmed that the agreement with Tesla has been finalized, making SHM the first Japanese automaker to adopt NACS for vehicles sold in Japan.

With the adoption of NACS, Afeela EVs will have access to Tesla's V3 and V4 Superchargers.

"We prioritize user convenience, which is why we decided to adopt NACS. We sincerely thank Tesla for the opportunity to adopt NACS," - said the General Director of Sony Honda Mobility.
