BMW’s New App Aims to Ease the Transition to EVs

Sep 5, 2024

BMW’s electric i models have been a hit, driving record sales for the luxury automaker. To build on this success, BMW is introducing a new feature in its MY BMW app designed to encourage owners of gas-powered BMWs to consider making the switch to electric.

First reported by Inside EVs, the app now includes an “Electric Vehicle Analysis” feature. This tool integrates with BMW’s Operating System 7 or newer, allowing users to compare their current gas-powered BMW with one of the brand’s electric models, like the i7. After tracking 200 trips or 1,250 miles, the app simulates how those journeys could have been completed using the selected electric model, showing the owner how easily the switch to electric could fit into their daily routine.

BMW believes this data-driven approach can address common concerns like range anxiety and the practicality of electric vehicles for everyday use.

“This is intended to combat the range anxiety and concerns about the everyday practicality of all-electric vehicles that are still prevalent today,” BMW stated in its release.

While it may take more than just app suggestions to persuade some owners to go electric, BMW hopes this feature will play a crucial role in easing the transition. If successful, it could help accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, benefiting both drivers and the environment.
