Norway is the first country where EVs outsell gas-powered cars

Sep 26, 2024

Norway has become the first country in the world where the number of electric cars exceeds that of gas-powered vehicles, according to data published by the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV).

Out of the 2.8 million registered passenger cars in the country, 26.3% are fully electric. However, diesel vehicles still hold the largest share, accounting for more than a third of all registered vehicles in Norway.

"The electrification of the passenger car fleet is progressing rapidly, and Norway is on track to become the first country where electric vehicles dominate," - said OFV’s director. He also predicted that by 2026, electric cars will outnumber diesel vehicles in the country.

The Norwegian government aims to end sales of new petrol and diesel cars by next year.
