Ford's Return to Formula 1
Oct 25, 2024
After two decades, Ford is making its way back to Formula 1 in a multi-year technical partnership with Red Bull Powertrains to develop a next-generation hybrid power unit set to debut in the 2026 season.
Through this partnership, Red Bull Ford power units will equip Oracle Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri cars from 2026 through at least 2030.
"This marks the beginning of a thrilling new chapter in Ford’s motorsport story, which started when my great-grandfather won a race that helped launch our company," said Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford. "Together with world champions Oracle Red Bull Racing, Ford returns to the pinnacle of the sport to showcase our tradition of innovation, sustainability, and electrification on a global stage."
Starting in 2023, Ford and Red Bull Powertrains have been working on developing an engine that aligns with the 2026 technical regulations, featuring a 350-kilowatt electric motor and a fully sustainable combustion engine.
Ford President and CEO Jim Farley said, “Ford’s return to Formula 1 with Red Bull Racing perfectly aligns with our vision for innovative, electrified, and modern vehicles. Formula 1 will serve as a highly effective platform for driving innovation and engaging new customers.”
Ford will bring its technical expertise to the championship team in areas like internal combustion engine development, battery technology, and electric drive systems.
By 2026, Ford will be the only manufacturer competing across a variety of racing categories, including WEC and IMSA (with Mustang GT3 in Le Mans 24 Hours), WRC with M-Sport Ford Puma Hybrid Rally1, Baja 1000 with Ranger Raptor and Bronco, as well as NASCAR, NHRA, and Supercars with Mustang. Ford continues to leverage motorsport for innovation, and this partnership will accelerate new technologies for future Ford electric vehicles.
